Surely We Can Live Without…

Published by Addict at 8:10 am under Technology Edit This

Today I thought I would express something which has been niggling away at my brain for a few months now. It’s fairly simple, but I really would love an answer! The question which I have been pondering for so long is which of these three we can live without: Tanks, DPS or (those very important) Healers.

Now, obviously Blizzard has designed World of Warcraft so that each of these three are equally important. Otherwise we would just be running around with a bunch of healers who cant kill anything, or tanks who look forward to their very slow deaths. This is why most conventional groups are made up of all three. However, in these groups three out of the five tend to be DPS in nature. This holds strong parallels to the work place, with a leader/boss type person (Tank), the ‘keeping it cool’ person (Healer) and the three people who carry out tasks reasonably well (DPS) but can easily be replaced by Sarah, the sexy new secretary.

So in a world where only tanks and healers existed, would civilization cope? Boss fights would certainly be longer, but would they actually be killed? With a 25 man raid being split into 15 Healers and 10 Tanks it would certainly be interesting, and with that amount of heals there would be very little excuse for deaths.

On the other hand, however, I accept that most DPS can kite and/or have pets. This ensures they receive minimal damage and tends to turn them into their own tanks. This won’t work with the majority of bosses but if Gruul’s Lair has taught me anything it can (almost) be done.

So in conclusion, I give up! It appears that Healers and Tanks go hand-in-hand with each other, but living without DPS would be incredibly difficult…

Why do I allow my brain to ponder these things?
